Arbolope was approached by the Carillon Bell Charitable Foundation as they completed the acquisition of key properties surrounding the under-utilized Carillon Park, with intentions to expand the park while simultaneously upgrading the existing footprint to create a vibrant, picturesque and cohesive concert destination in downtown Centralia, Illinois.
Based on the design brief provided by the Foundation, Arbolope’s goals included updating the park to contemporary design standards for accessibility, circulation, and community gathering; providing activities and areas of interest for children and adults alike; promoting an image of a vibrant downtown community; and implementing new technologies to enhance the concert experience.
Other updates and improvements include the addition of low-maintenance trees and other native plant materials that are suitable for the area; creating new walking paths throughout the site; and upgrading existing lighting along walkways and trees.
The resulting park – now under construction – takes it’s design cues from the visual of emanating sound waves. The park’s design utilizes strategically located concentric berms and knolls to define intimate yet open amphitheater-like picnic areas that gently capture the music emanating the tower. Meanwhile, new pathways shaded by native trees shepherd neighbors through the park to adjacent avenues and main-street businesses.
